#VicCommuterHacks: Top 8 Songs for Your Commute
Want a song to strut down the subway platform to during rush hour, or an ambient track to unwind to on the streetcar home? This week, the Vic Commuter Dons and guest commuter contributor Sahdia are excited to present our favourite songs to listen to on our commutes to and from campus! Scroll to the bottom of the page for a Spotify playlist that you can follow.
1. Waking Up Slow - Gabrielle Aplin
Sahdia: “ This is such a good song to play in my morning commute to drown out thoughts about how terrible the TTC is or anything else that bothers me. The music is great because it really sets my mood for the day in a chill and relaxing way. The lyrics are also cute cute cute.”
2. Good Vibrations - Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch
Saambavi: “No explanation required.”
3. To Glory - Two Steps to Hell
Liam: “This is a HYPE track: it transports you into the world of epic battles and warriors. I like to listen to this when I want to walk fast someplace or on the subway when I feel like being transported to another world.”
4. Doing Good - Milky Chance
Victoria: “True story: listening to this song for two weeks straight on repeat during my walk to and from campus got me a ticket and meet-and-greet to a sold-out Milky Chance show earlier this year. According to the band, this song was inspired by the tendency to tell each other that we’re ‘doing good’ even when we aren’t — however, they hope that it will also remind us of things in our life to be grateful for.”
5. another perspective - Idealism
Sam: “My study music tends to double as my commute music, and the relaxing mixes by Idealism are my favourite go-to. Life, especially during midterm season, can get pretty hectic — so if you want to reach a sense of inner peace and quiet, try giving this track a listen!”
6. Drops of Jupiter - Train
James: “It’s my theme song.”
7. Street Lights - Kanye West
Karen: “I would have picked No Church in the Wild (Jay Z) — perfect song to strut to during rush hour (“Human beings in a mob…”) — but it’s no longer on Spotify. So instead, this one’s for the late-night commutes when you’re the protagonist of a TV episode, staring out the window of your moving vehicle, reflecting on the direction of your life, right before the credits roll.”
8. “Raindrop” Prelude in D-Flat Major (Op. 28, №15) - Frederic Chopin
Samantha: “Ever want to drown out all the noise and zone out (or nap) in peace? I love this classic prelude because it is soft and soothing, which is perfect for relaxing after a long day or falling asleep! (Just make sure you wake up for your stop!)”
