Tired of Googling ‘summer jobs in Toronto and scrolling through endless pages for employers that seem legitimate? Want to expand your options? Check out our top eight ways that you can get a head start on your summer job search!

1. Use the Career Learning Network

Victoria: “The Career Learning Network (CLN) is a job board exclusively for members of the U of T community. You can browse for off-campus, on-campus, volunteer, casual, and work-study positions on the site and stay up-to-date on career centre tools and resources. I’ve used it to get a summer work-study position, and I know many people who have found it helpful for research positions and part-time employment.”

2. Use Your Social Connections

James: “Think about who you’ve connected with over your time in U of T or maybe even prior to U of T. It is often said that ‘It’s not what you know, but who you know.’ Ask your former teachers, ask friends, see your professors in their office hours. A former high school teacher of mine once connected me to a great summer student job working in data entry. Another volunteer opportunity I’m looking to apply for this summer is one I heard from a friend of mine. You never know what you’ll find if you just ask people in your circle.”

3. Drop off Your Resume at Stores or Restaurants

Karen: “If, like me, you’re a creature of habit and pretty much only frequent the same places, a great way to land a summer job is to continue doing what you’re already doing! Chances are, you probably know your way around the place better than their newly-hired employees, and no doubt, you’re passionate about their product. So, the next time you visit your favourite bubble tea café, slide that resume over the counter in exchange for your signature order of oolong pearl milk tea….(less ice, no sugar).”

4. Attend the Women in Tech conference

Samantha: “This exciting conference on February 1st will be held right at Vic, so you won’t have to travel far! This is a great opportunity to network with tech industry leaders and learn from a panel of keynote speakers. It is open to all students and will have tech company representatives actively looking to hire.”

5. Download the Swob App

Jane: “If you’re looking for a job and haven’t had any luck, download Swob. Swob is a new job app for students, where you can apply to a variety of jobs, quickly and easily. Swipe to find the right job for you no need to go travel around to pass out your resume, have the jobs come to your phone.”

Download Swob Free in the App Store.

6. Make an appointment with the Career Counsellor at Vic

Sam: “Need advice on your career path and what options lie ahead of you? Unsure of what your next step is when it comes to landing your dream job? Book an appointment with our own in-house Career Educator at Vic, available every Thursday until early May. They can help answer any questions that you have about careers and even help you out with finding a way to get that summer job.”

7. Carry Your Resume Everywhere

Liam: “While not a direct way to get a job, it saves a lot of time and shows preparation if you’re able to hand over a resume to someone who is interested. Whether it’s by asking about jobs through friends, applying to places you frequent, or meeting people at networking events, having a resume ready saves a lot of time.”

8. Make a LinkedIn profile

Saambavi: “LinkedIn has a great job posting recommendation feature that collects data based on your previous jobs or your areas of interest. You can even apply for jobs through LinkedIn, allowing potential employers to see your profile.”
